Karaikal: The loss and devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami is unforgettable, creating a wave of hope in the hearts of individuals and organizations who have been struggling to help the affected area for the last two years. Karaikal is one of the worst-affected areas and rescue efforts are ongoing, with the Natural Environment Wildlife Society (NEWS) being one of the small plantations. Kalaykal is a coastal region and the people living in rural areas are mostly engaged in agriculture and fishing. The tsunami not only destroyed local livelihoods but also exposed the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. At least 492 people died, more than 17,000 people were displaced and thousands were left homeless, according to the Puducherry government. Approximately 2,000 acres of crops were also affected.
